If you were intrigued by the BBC Four programme Tales From The National Parks you may wonder what became of Honister Slate Mine once the cameras stopped rolling. In the true spirit of Mark Weir, Honister remains open for business and excited about the future. Today Honister is run by Mark’s partner Jan, his brother Joe and Mum Celia, who are all doubly determined to continue his legacy along with his loyal staff. Honister offers fascinating Mine Tours, the Original Via Ferrata experience, a brilliant shop and a mountaintop café for visitors to this dramatic area. A new website is now live – www.honistergreenslate.com offering beautiful Lake District slate products for homes, gardens, memorials and the building trade. Positive negotiations are also continuing with Natural England about reconfiguring the Via Ferrata to create an even better tourism experience in Spring 2012. There are also plans to create a permanent exhibition to Mark’s life at the mine. So please do come and visit us and support what Mark began. As the man himself would say – keep smiling! Honister also featured on James May’s new Man Lab series on October 25th where we helped his sidekick Rory source a piece of prime Lake District slate for a pool table they were making.
